At Flagstone SCC we are a learning community that is promoting pathways to success for all or our diverse learners, though the design of programs of learning that develop key 21st century learning skills. Our values of Learn, Show Respect and Contribute to the Community are mobilized and explicitly taught through the curriculum. In particular, we seek to develop four key capabilities that are the foundational tenants underpinning successful transitions to further learning and active citizenship.
To equip students with these skills we have adopted evidence-based learning routines that create calm and engaging classrooms, offering opportunities for focused review of work, checking for understanding and the gradual release of responsibility that build the confidence and capacity of adolescent learners as they progress to independent learning. Students remain the centre of this learning philosophy with explicit whole class instruction creating well-paced, engaging learning experiences where all students can be active participants together co-constructing meaning and engaging in higher order thinking and complex problem solving linked to real life contexts.
Engaged Learners
To support students to engage in learning, Junior Secondary teaching teams work collaboratively each term through classroom problem solving team meetings co-designing supports and routines for students. These include the adoption of emotional regulation activities, opportunities for student engagement with digital pedagogies, and the review of student support provisions and identified differentiation practices.
Through our Positive Culture of Learning Rewards system, students' positive engagement in learning and adherence to our school values are rewarded through the receipt of Culture of Learning Points. These points are banked with students able to participate in rewards day activities at the end of each term if they achieve the points target. This includes events such as our Inflatable Day, Food Trucks, If Festival, Colour Fun Run, and Novelty games.
Assessment Literate Learners
The creation of a culture of agentic and empowered learners remains at the core of our pedagogical approach to curriculum design and delivery. This is supported through the adoption of evidence based instructional practices that provide students with structure opportunities to become insiders in their learning. Through engagement in goal setting, co-construction of learning intentions and success criteria, annotation of student friendly marking guides, co-constructing learning walls and utilizing peer and self led feedback practices, students are empowered to take ownership over their learning and are equipped with the knowledge and skills to maximise their learning outcomes.
These practices are nested beside triad Learning Walks and Talks whereby teachers and school leaders visit classrooms to see and hear about student learning asking the 5 questions of learners. These conversations allow students and teachers to create genuine partnerships, receiving feedback, reflecting on their learning and planning the next best learning move that will accelerate learning outcomes.
Subject selection process
State schools ensure that students in Year 9 develop a JET Plan in partnership with their parents. The JET plan is a compulsory, key component of a school’s career education program. It maps out a plan of action to put students on track for success in senior secondary, post-school education and work.
Flagstone SCC will be conducting JET Plan interviews with a parent and their student on the following dates in 2025:
Bookings can be made via our online booking system External link. Instructions External link are available to assist parents to make bookings. JETP interviews are approximately 30 minutes.
For new students, subject selection will be organised during the enrolment process.
